The room was empty again.
Laeli was confused. They had just had checkups a mere two days ago, so Matt had no other reason to leave the hospital room.
Unless...
Unless Matt had recovered enough to be discharged from the hospital.
Surprisingly, Laeli was a bit unwilling to consider that option. If Matt left, she would be all alone again, a feeling that she didn’t much care to experience.
Laeli picked up A Midsummer Night’s Dream
If she was going to wait, she might as well spend her time on something worthwhile.
Time passed quickly, and soon, sunshine began assaulting her eyes.
Noon.
Yet, Matt still hadn’t returned.
Laeli could feel herself beginning to get anxious, glancing over to the door, then to the clock, every few moments. With every echo of a footstep down the hall, she would find herself sitting up to see if it was her roommate.
“Hello Laeli~”
“Oh, Silai.”
“You’re probably wondering where Matt is, huh?”
Laeli nodded, grateful at the preceptiveness of the girl.
“He’s just gonna be away for today and tomorrow! Matt told me to come and keep you company!”
“That’s nice of you. Thanks.”
“Nope! I’ve been really curious about you after all! Since I usually come in the morning when you’re still asleep, we can never chat about girl stuff! It gets boring talking to boorish men like Matt all the time, right?”
“You have no idea.” Laeli shook her head in mock disapproval.
“So! Have you heard of Coldplay’s performance at Lollapalooza? It’s so...”
Silai continued to talk, sometimes getting really riled up. She stood, she acted out the lyrics, she even once started belting out lyrics to some obscure pop song. All the while, Silai never once dropped that ever present grin of hers.
Laeli couldn’t help but smile at the likeness between the siblings.
“That’s interesting.”
“Isn’t it! Next time I come, I’ll bring you their CD! I have it autographed!”
“Haha... there’s no need for that.”
“What? Why?”
“I... I’ve only got ten days left.”
“Left to what? You’re being discharged? Ah! That’s great!”
“In a way.”
It was better not to talk about such morbid things in front of such a happy girl.
Laeli liked the way Silai looked so cheerful, and so bright.
"Laeli, how old are you?" Silai suddenly changed topics, and focused her attention back on her faithful audience member.
"Eighteen."
"Did you know that Matt's nineteen?"
"Interesting."
"And the legal age for marriage is eighteen, right?"
Laeli paused before answering.
"...what are you implying?"
“You know, Laeli, you should just marry Matt already. Then we can become sisters!”
“Don’t say such ridiculous things.”
“But I really like you!”
“You can’t just force Matt to do stuff like that.”
“Oh~ I’m sure he wouldn’t mind."
So ended day 10.
