Day 12. Checkup Empty Day 12. Checkup

Post by Sophie August 7th 2011, 11:35 pm

Laeli awoke to an empty room. It was unusual, not having a loud roommate to greet her in the morning with enthusiastic cheers. The nurse was missing too, leading Laeli to assume that something was wrong.

    Something was wrong, or...
    It was the dreaded day.

    Checkups.

She hated the doctor. He looked like a puffer-fish, fat with the wealth he scraped from his patients. Since Laeli's family was rich, he fawned over her. The doctor treated her as if she were a child, using 'kiddish' language. The mere act of conversing with him often lead Laeli to headaches.
She was seventeen for heavens sake!

Within a few minutes, Laeli could hear the characteristic footsteps echoing down the hall. The overweight doctor's steps were considerably louder then those of the slender nurses. He stepped into the hospital room with the air of a king.

"How are we doing today?" His voice was like that of an adult talking to a petulant child.
"We're doing fine." Laeli could barely contain the dripping sarcasm in her voice.
"Oh, that's good to hear! Have we any ouchies?"
    "No ouchies, doctor."
"Let Mr. Doctor examine you, alright Laelae?"

She grimaced at the nickname. Laelae?
There were only two other people who called her by that name. Her kindergarten teacher, and her personal maid. Back when she was four.

    "Yes, Mr. Doctor."

It was easier to just play along with the doctor. The faster this checkup was over with, the less mentally taxing it would be for Laeli.

"Laelae, it seems you're getting better!"
"Really, Mr. Doctor? Laelae is so happy."
"Mr. Doctor is going to give Laelae some sleepy potion so he can drive you to the examination room on the wheely bed now, okay?"

For heavens sake. The doctor could at least he could use the correct terminology.
    Sleepy potion? Wheely bed?

    "Okay, Mr. Doctor."

Laeli hoped that when next she woke up, the doctor would be gone from her sight.
    Far, far from her sight.

    She wasn't lucky.

"Laelae, good news! Your body is getting better!"
"Doctor, just tell me how long until I die."
"Don't say such scary things, you're doing just fine!"
"Doctor." She sent the man such a fierce glare. "How long?"
"Two weeks, but the doctors are working on a magic potion for Laelae so she can live forever."
"Twelve days. That's how long, Doctor."
    "Laelae--"
"Don't call me that!" She suddenly snapped.
Laeli noticed Matt being wheeled into the room, snickering.
    "You didn't hear that, Matt!"
"What? What's wrong Laelae? Do we have some ouchies?" He guffawed, barely able to restrain the peals of laughter.
"Doctor, thank you for your examination. Goodbye." She ignored Matt, "Until next time."

After a few more formalities, the doctor finally left the room, much to Laeli's relief.
    However, her relief was short-lived.
Matt still had to get his gibe in.

    "W-what was that about, Laelae?"
    "Shut up Matt."
    "Aww, Laelae's blushing!"
"Matt! Anata wa watashi no sono mō ichi-kai yobidasu baai, watashi wa anata no nodo o katto shimasu." She spoke the warning in a different language, lest the nurses heard and scolded her for the threat.
"Dono yō ni shite, Laelae o sore o okonau nodarou ka?"
"Somehow. I'll do it somehow. Mark my words."

Matt ignored Laeli's threat, merely continued to laugh while Laeli tried to hide her furious blushing.
Gradually, the laughter faded. Silence took over the room again--the uncomfortable silence.

Laeli glanced over at Matt to see the reason why he was being so quiet. The expression on his face bothered her. It seemed to be a mixture of anxiety and fear.
    Some sort of terrible fear.
Had something gone wrong at his checkup?

    "Matt, what's wrong? Your expression..."
"Ah? Nothing! Nothing's wrong!" Matt quickly swiped at his eyes. He grinned. "Are you worrying about me?"
    "Yes."

Laeli responded to the question bluntly. She was worried, seeing her only friend in distress made her feel uncomfortable. However, the response seemed to fluster Matt a bit.

"H-haha! I guess you do have a heart then!"
"I don't like seeing people close to me looking so sad."
    "Close? I... I'm close?"
"Of course. You're important to me."

With those words, Matt turned positively crimson.
"Uh... thanks. Thanks for that, Laeli." He stammered, looking away. "I...I'm feeling much better now."

Laeli was confused. She hadn't said anything extraordinary, merely stated the facts.
    She sighed.
And some said that women were the hardest to understand.

    So ended day 12.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this chapter!
:D I'm loving your writing so much.
    Since it's not too lengthy,
REALLY fun and intense to read,
    And just. .
    So amazing D:!

    Matt T_T. . .

    ALSO!
I guess, if anything, I was surprised that Matt heard the "ouchies" part of Mr. Doctor~ Especially since he wasn't there in the beginning of the scene, right? When ouchies was said to Laelae? :3

    But again, splitting hairs.
    FANTABULOUS CHAPTER :D
