She wove to waves of red and swirls of white.
Pain.
So much pain.
Laeli screamed, the noise jolting Matt awake. The machines began to all simultaneously beep, as if cheerfully screaming alongside her.
“Laeli! What’s wrong?”
She could only whimper in reply, clutching her stomach in pain. The nurse rushed in, clearly worried.
“Ah...h-help! Help!” She looked at the nurse with teary eyes, “W-what’s wrong with me?”
“Take some pills for now.” The nurse held out two blue and red capsules. Laeli swallowed them in a glup, taking a few long breaths to calm herself down. “Does your stomach hurt?”
“Mmhm.”
“Have you eaten any outside food, lately?”
“Cotton candy.”
“Cotton candy! That’s ridiculous! You know that your digestive system can’t handle foods like that!”
“I’m sorry.”
“Nurse, it was really me who--”
“I’m sorry nurse, I was irresponsible.” Laeli interrupted Matt’s confession, “It won’t happen again.”
After reprimanding Laeli a little more, the nurse sighed.
“I didn’t think you’d be such a trouble-maker.” She grinned ruefully. “Luckily, nothing seems too damaged. You should be fine.” The adult left, her high heels making a clicking against tiled floor of the hall.
"Why'd you cover for me?"
"Hm? It wasn't your fault."
"But... I was the one who forced you to e--"
"First of all, no one forces me to do anything." She paused. "Secondly, it was the two day anniversary of our friendship."
"You're not still mad?"
"No. Hopefully you aren't either?"
"Nope! Yay! I'd hug you if I could!"
"T-there's no need to be that happy." Laeli looked down, continuing in a soft, almost unintelligible voice. "I'm sorry. I was a bit harsh."
"Understandable, under the circumstances. I'm just happy you're okay. You looked in pretty bad shape."
"I won't be taken down by something as simple as cotton candy."
"Oh~ Are you challenging the might of my candy?"
"No, sir. I would never dare."
"Haha! She's learning how to make jokes!"
So ended day 16, midst the happy arias of laughter.
